Thinking about Match dating and want an honest Match review before you hand over your card details? This page sets out what the service offers in the UK, what you can do without paying, what the paid passes cost and how auto-renewal works. Everything here comes from Match’s UK terms of use and its listing in the UK App Store, not from made-up user stories.

What is Match and who runs it?

Match is available in the UK at uk.match.com and as an app for iPhone and Android. In the UK App Store it appears as “MATCH – Dating App”, and its description says it helps you meet people nearby wherever you are in the UK. It is aimed at single adults who want meaningful conversations and a long-term relationship. You must be 18 or over to join.

According to the UK terms of use (revised on 2 February 2026), your contract is with Meetic SAS, a company registered in Paris that belongs to the Match Group family of dating brands. In the App Store the seller is Match.com International Limited. The terms are governed by the laws of England, and you keep the protection of the consumer law where you live.

Match does not publish member numbers for the UK, so you will not find any here.

What is free on Match?

Signing up costs nothing. According to the App Store listing, “creating your Match profile and getting started is free”. Without paying you can:

The catch is in the detail of the passes. Reading every message you receive is part of the Essential pass, and unlimited messaging is part of Premium. In practice, the free version lets you test the waters and see who is around you, but you will hit limits quickly if you want to write to lots of people.

Match also sells extras on their own, such as Super Likes, which show extra interest in a profile, and Private Mode, which lets you choose who sees your profile.

Passes and prices: does Match renew automatically?

Match splits its paid features into three passes, according to the App Store description:

The difference between Essential and Premium matters. Essential lets you read what you receive. Premium is the pass that lets you write freely. If you mostly want to reply to people who contact you, a lighter pass may be enough. If you want to start conversations yourself, Premium is closer to what you need.

The UK App Store lists, among others:

The same list also contains several items simply called “match.com for iPhone” (from £4.99 to £59.99) without a stated length or content, so we do not attach them to any pass. Prices on the website are not public: they are shown once you are logged in and can differ from the app. Compare them in the channel you plan to buy through.

Subscriptions renew automatically. According to the UK terms, a subscription continues for an equivalent period unless you stop the renewal, and you can switch it off from 24 hours after purchase until at least 48 hours before it renews. Some offers have a reduced price for a first period and then renew at the standard price, so check the renewal price before you pay. If you chose to pay for a longer period in instalments, the remaining instalments are still due even after you switch off renewal.

Who is Match for?

Match is less suited to people who want to message freely without paying. In that case, start with our guide to free dating apps, or read our Hinge review.

If you are over 50, look at Ourtime, which is run by the same group and uses the same passes. If compatibility matching appeals to you, read our eharmony review. For a wider comparison, see the best dating sites in the UK and our guide to dating apps for relationships.

Tips to get the most out of Match

  1. Put the effort into your profile. A full profile with recent photos gives people a reason to like you back. Our dating app bio examples can help.
  2. Use the free period to explore. Browse and send Likes for a few days before you decide whether a pass is worth it.
  3. Pick the right pass. If you want to write first, Essential will not be enough. Premium is the pass with unlimited messaging.
  4. Start short. The one-week Premium pass is the smallest commitment, but it renews too.
  5. Switch off renewal straight away. Once 24 hours have passed after purchase, you can turn off auto-renewal and still use the pass until the end of the period.
  6. Write a good first message. Refer to something in their profile. See our tips on the first message on a dating app.

How to cancel Match

If you bought in the app, cancel through your Apple ID or Google Play subscriptions. If you bought on the website, log in to your account and follow the instructions to turn off auto-renewal. Deleting the app or your profile does not end the subscription. Do it at least 48 hours before the renewal date and keep the confirmation.

The terms give you 14 days to cancel after a purchase. However, they also say that your first login after buying counts as a request for immediate access, which you will be charged for. This is general information, not legal advice. If you have a problem you cannot resolve with Match, Citizens Advice can help you with your consumer rights.

Summary: our Match review

Match is an established dating site and app focused on serious relationships. You can create a profile, browse and send Likes for free, but reading everything and messaging freely require a paid pass. Prices in the UK App Store are clear, from £19.99 for a week of Premium, but subscriptions renew automatically and the cancellation window is strict. Before you decide, compare it with Ourtime, eharmony and the free dating apps.
