Hinge review 2026: prices, free features and tips
Hinge is a free dating app built around prompts rather than endless swiping. See what you can do without paying, what Hinge+ and HingeX add, and how auto-renewal works in the UK App Store.
Wondering whether Hinge is worth downloading and want a Hinge review based on facts rather than hype? Here is what the app offers in the UK, what you can do for free, what the paid tiers add and how renewal works. The information comes from Hinge’s UK App Store listing and its help centre.
What is Hinge and who runs it?
Hinge is a dating app available on iPhone and Android in the UK. In the UK App Store it appears as “Hinge Dating App: Meet & Date”, sold by Hinge, Inc., which is part of Match Group. You must be 18 or over. Hinge presents itself as the dating app for people who want to get off dating apps: the aim is to meet someone and leave.
Instead of a single photo and a swipe, a Hinge profile mixes photos with written, video and voice prompts. You like or comment on a specific photo or answer, which makes the first message easier to write. Hinge does not publish UK user numbers on the pages we checked, so we do not give any.
What is free on Hinge?
Hinge is free to download and use. Without paying you can:
- create a profile with photos and prompts
- set your basic preferences for who you want to see
- like or comment on a photo or prompt
- match and chat with the people you match with
The main limit is the number of likes. According to Hinge’s help centre, free users can send only a limited number of likes per day. Hinge does not publish a fixed figure for every account, so check in the app how many you have. Because you cannot like everyone, it pays to be selective.
Hinge+ and HingeX: prices and renewal
Hinge has two subscription tiers, according to the App Store listing and its help centre:
- Hinge+: unlimited likes and the ability to see everyone who likes you
- HingeX: everything in Hinge+, plus enhanced recommendations and priority likes, so your likes are shown sooner
You can also buy one-off extras. In the UK App Store a bundle of three Roses costs £9.99 and a Boost costs £9.99. A Rose is a stronger way of showing interest than a normal like.
The UK App Store lists “Hinge+ Subscription” items at £12.99 and £14.99, plus other subscription items, but it does not say how long each one lasts or which one is HingeX. The exact price and period are shown in the app before you confirm.
Subscriptions renew automatically. According to the App Store listing, the subscription renews unless auto-renew is turned off at least 24 hours before the end of the current period, and you are charged for the renewal within the last 24 hours. You can manage it in your Apple account settings.
Who is Hinge for?
- people who want something more thoughtful than swiping on photos
- those who like conversation starters built into the profile
- anyone who wants to message matches for free
- singles in cities and large towns, where there are more profiles to choose from
Hinge may suit you less if you want suggestions based on a detailed personality quiz, or if you would rather meet people in a specific age group. The daily like limit can also feel tight if you live somewhere with fewer users.
Is it worth paying for Hinge?
For many people the free version is enough. You can match and chat without paying, so the question is mainly whether the daily like limit holds you back. If you live in a busy area and use your likes carefully, you may never feel the need to upgrade.
Hinge+ makes most sense if you want to see everyone who has already liked you, so you can match straight back instead of waiting for them to appear in your feed. HingeX is aimed at people who want their likes to be seen sooner and want more tailored suggestions. If you do decide to pay, start with the shortest period shown in the app and turn off auto-renewal straight away if you are not sure you want to continue.
Hinge sits between swipe apps and traditional dating sites. Tinder, also part of Match Group, is free to like, match and chat, and its paid tier Tinder Plus starts at £3.99 in the UK App Store. Sites such as Match and eharmony ask for more information up front and focus on long-term relationships. Our guide on how to choose a dating app walks you through the differences.
Tips for using Hinge for free
- Choose prompts that invite a reply. A specific answer (“the best chip shop in Whitby”) gives people something to comment on. See our dating app bio examples.
- Comment rather than just like. A short comment on a prompt stands out more than a plain like.
- Use your likes carefully. With a daily limit, focus on profiles you are genuinely interested in.
- Move from chat to a date. If the conversation flows, suggest a simple plan. Our first date ideas can help.
- Stay safe. Keep the chat in the app until you feel comfortable and meet somewhere public. Read our dating app safety guide.
How to cancel Hinge+ or HingeX
If you subscribed through the App Store, go to Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions, and cancel Hinge. On Android, use Google Play → Payments & subscriptions. Deleting the app or your account does not cancel a subscription. Cancel at least 24 hours before the renewal date and you keep the paid features until the end of the period.
This is general information, not legal advice. If you have a problem with a payment, contact Apple or Google first, and Citizens Advice can explain your consumer rights.
Summary: our Hinge review
Hinge is a good free option if you want profiles with more personality than a photo and a name. Matching and messaging are free, and the main limit is the daily number of likes. Hinge+ and HingeX add unlimited likes, a view of who likes you and better visibility, and they renew automatically. If you want a more structured search for a long-term relationship, with compatibility matching or an age-focused community, you can also compare our partners Match, eharmony and, if you are over 50, Ourtime. More free options are in our guide to free dating apps.
